Completed in 2023, the Psychiatric Hospital in Tampere, Finland, was designed by C.F. Møller Architects and is an outstanding example of healing architecture: a planning approach that aims to strengthen the physical and mental well-being of patients, staff and relatives.
Three U-shaped wards and a ring-shaped administrative and activity building form a courtyard with plenty of greenery, which promotes activities and social interaction in a protected environment.
Adjacent to the Tampere University Hospital, the building complex combines functionality and flexibility: departments arranged in pairs share central staff and functional units for short distances and efficient communication. The design also draws on the local environment and history of Tampere: the choice of materials – brick and wood – and the natural, garden-like design are inspired by the historic clinic in Pitkäniemi and the industrial heritage of the region.
The forward-looking clinic features ➥ eleven heat-insulating fire curtains Fibershield®-I, which not only meet safety standards but also blend unobtrusively into the modern architecture, increasing the use of space thanks to their special properties: The insulating fabric makes fire-load-free zones and sprinklers redundant, meaning that the premises can be used without restriction.
