The old national library on Rue de Richelieu is an architectural gem in the heart of Paris, reflecting the splendor of centuries past. Originally built in the 17th century, the building has been expanded and renovated many times to accommodate the growing collection.
Particularly impressive is the magnificent Labrouste Reading Room, completed in 1868. Its delicate cast-iron columns support an elegant domed ceiling, pierced with skylights that bathe the room in soft natural light. This blend of engineering and classical aesthetics makes the room a 19th-century masterpiece.
Today, the Richelieu building houses collections of art and humanities as well as precious manuscripts and prints. After extensive renovations, it shines in new splendor, but remains a living testimony to the connection between history, art and knowledge.
