The Hamburg airport is the fifth largest airport in Germany. Hamburg's airport history goes back to 1910, when a hall for an air ship was built in Hamburg at the request of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. In the following decades, the area around the air ship hall gradually developed into the airport of today. In 2012 approximately 13.7 million passengers used the airport to reach their destination.
