Construction of the original Goetheanum, a gigantic wooden structure with two domes and carvings and ornate paintings inside, was commenced in 1913, opened in 1920 and completely destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve in 1922/23. Rudolf Steiner presented a model for the second building in 1924 which is the Goetheanum of today. Both the newly built Goetheanum and the surrounding buildings took the local topography, landscape and rock formations into account. Around 300 people work on the campus and about 1000 people visit the Goetheanum every year. (Source: www.goetheanum.org/Der-Goetheanum-Bau.133.0.html)
